Founded in 1970, Augsburg University (http://www.uni-augsburg.de/) is one of the new modern universities in Bavaria. It has now approximately 18,000 students and is divided into eight faculties (Faculty of Applied Informatics, Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, Faculty of History and Philology, Faculty of Catholic Theology).

Computer Science at Augsburg University stands for the combination of core informatics with applied subjects: medical informatics, engineering informatics, environmental informatics, geo informatics, economic informatics and media informatics under one roof. This broad network is a unique feature in Bavaria and in Germany. Furthermore, the department distinguishes itself from most other universities by not just offering a BSc and MSc degree in Computer Science, but also BSc and MSc degrees in Computer Science & Multimedia and in Geo Informatics. Within the Bavaria Network of Excellence (ENB), the Computer Science Department is conducting as a lead manager the Elite Study Program Software Engineering in cooperation with TU Munich and LMU Munich.

The research unit Human-Centered Multimedia (HCM) was founded in 2001 as part of the department of Computer Science at Augsburg University. The members of the team have long-term experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of multimodal user interfaces, affective computing and social signal processing and conducted projects for the EU, the DFG, the BMBF and industries in this area. Current and previous projects with a focus on social signal processing and affective computing include: EU IP CEEDS (The Collective Experience of Empathic Data Systems), EU STREP TARDIS (Training young Adult’s Regulation of emotions and Development of social Interaction Skills), EU STREP ILHAIRE (Incorporating Laughter into Human-Avatar Interactions: Research and Evaluation), EU RIA KRISTINA (Knowledge-Based Information Agent with Social Competence and Human Interaction Capabilities), EU RIA ARIA-VALUSPA (Artificial Retrieval of Information Assistants – Virtual Agents with Linguistic Understanding, Social skills, and Personalised Aspects), BMBF EmpaT (Empathic Training Companions for Job Interviews) BMBF SenseEmotion (Multisensory Pain and Emotion Recognition: Avatar-based Affect Management for the Elderly), BMBF VIVA (trustworthy and likeable lifelike social robot) or BMBF EmmA (Emotional mobile avatar as a coaching assistant for psychological support).
